Admission requirements

You are not from Germany but would like to study at Karlshochschule International University? Good idea! However, you will need to have a qualification for university entrance that allows you to study in Germany (Here you can find out which educational certificates obtained outside of Germany make you eligible for admission to higher education in Germany). Furthermore, English language skills are essential, and even more important - you as a person!
Your talents, interests and experiences will be decisive in securing you admission to our University. Are you the right person for our University and is the program you have chosen the right one for you? We will find out at the colloquium (admission interview). But first let’s take a look at the application procedure and requirements for your application:


Formal application

Before applying to Karlshochschule International University, you need to know our schedule: the academic year starts on September 1st and ends on August 31st of the following year. Classes normally begin at the start of October. The application deadline for applicants from EU-countries is September 15th of each year, for non-EU applicants May 31st of each year. In special cases, an application after the deadlines is possible after prior consultation with our admissions team.

Your application documents consist of:

If you wish to apply to our University, you will need to fill in and send all of the following documents. Please note that all documents must be submitted in either the German or English language.
1. Application for admission with passport-sized photograph
Show us what you are made of! You can download the application form here. Please be sure to include a passport-sized photograph and your email address.

2. An officially certified copy of your school leaving certificate containing a transcript of grades
Please hand in an officially certified copy of your school leaving certificate. In Germany, copies can only be certified by a notary or an official office that is authorized with an official seal, such as town halls, public authorities or universities. Outside of Germany, only German embassies or consulates are authorized to make officially certified copies.

When assessing your academic performance, special attention will be paid to your mathematics grade.

3. If applicable, an officially certified copy of your university transcript of records

If you have already studied at another university, you will need to submit a current transcript of records.

4. Proof of proficiency in the English and German languages
Classes are held in English at Karlshochschule, either from the very beginning (International Business program) or from the third semester onwards (all other degree programs). International students who are not fluent in German have the option of starting in the International Business program and changing into another program after the first two semesters.

  • level C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) or
  • IELTS of 6.5 points or above or
  • Internet-based TOEFL score of at least 100 points,

unless English is your native language.

All other Bachelor's Degree Programs Proof of German language proficiency:

  • Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH-2) or
  • Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (Test DaF TDN 4).

Proof of English language proficiency:

  • level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) or
  • IELTS of 6.0 points or above or
  • Internet-based TOEFL score of at least 80 points,

unless English/German is your native language.

If you are participating in a German or English language course at the time of application, please submit proof of enrolment in the course and present the required language certificate before commencing your studies.

5. Letter of motivation
The letter of motivation offers you the opportunity to explain why you have decided to apply for the program at our University, why you think you will complete the program successfully and what you think your perfect role will be after graduation. The letter of motivation should be typed and cover one page.

6. Curriculum vitae in tabular form

Your curriculum vitae should give us a brief overview of your life to date.

Certificates documenting vocational training, internships, international experience, extra-curricular commitment at school or in charitable / non-profit associations support a successful application.

9. If applicable, certificate of preparatory / foundation college for foreigners (Studienkolleg)

10. If applicable, an APS certificate (for applicants from China, Vietnam and Mongolia only)
If you are from China, Vietnam or Mongolia, please submit a certificate from the Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) of your home country with your application.

Your application will be be thoroughly checked by uni-assist e.V. (Arbeits- und Servicestelle für Internationale Studienbewerber e.V.). Please send your application documents to the following address:

You can also send an online application via www.uni-assist.de. If important documents are missing, uni-assist e.V. will inform you so that you hand them in as soon as possible. Your application can only be processed if it is complete.

uni-assist e.V. charges a fee for checking your documents. Your application will be processed after you have paid the fee. Therefore it is important that you transfer the fee to uni-assist e.V. at the same time as you send your application. You can find more information about the fees and payment at the web site of uni-assist e.V.. No additional fees are charged for the rest of the application procedure at Karlshochschule. In order to guarantee that your application is processed in time and any questions arising from your application can be clarified, please apply four weeks before the deadlines to uni-assist e.V.


After the formal application

What's next?

Once uni-assist e.V. has assessed your application documents, you will be informed on the result. If your documents meet our formal admission requirements, they will be forwarded to us.

Important: once uni-assist e.V. has confirmed that your application has been forwarded to Karlshochschule you can apply for a visa at the German consulate in your home country.

When we have received your application documents from uni-assist e.V., we will examine it internally and invite you to participate in a colloquium (admission interview) if it meets our requirements.

1. The colloquium

We want to get to know you in the colloquium. It is conducted by two professors and takes 30 to 60 minutes. It will show us if you are the right candidate for our University and your chosen degree program and you will be able to decide whether our University is the right choice for you. If you are not able to come to Karlsruhe for the colloquium, the Admissions Committee may decide to conduct it by telephone or VoIP.

2. Admission

After the colloquium, the Admissions Committee will decide whether to offer you a place to study at Karlshochschule. In general, we inform applicants about the decision on the same day in a feedback session.

If the decision is positive, you have one week to accept your place on the program. During this week you can review all the information and all your impressions of our University and so you will be able to take a well-considered decision. You can also make your decision to study at Karlshochschule at a later date and will be offered a place (depending on availability).

Expenses and benefits

    As a private institution, Karlshochschule International University offers you many advantages: ideal group sizes, modern facilities, personal contact between professors and students – just to mention a few. This is financed by tuition fees. In the academic year 2012/2013 the amaount of tuition fees is €650 per month.

In addition, you will have to cover the costs of excursions and learning materials and pay the student union contribution of €52,70.

Exchange students: exchange students from partner universities receive a full tuition waiver.

We believe that tuition fees should not be considered as a cost, but as an investment, since as a graduate of Karlshochschule International University you will have excellent career prospects. The compact organization of studies and intensive counselling by our instructors enable our graduates to enter the job market early in comparison to similar programs. Moreover, the practical study components enable you to establish and maintain direct contact to companies and their networks throughout your studies.

Exchange students can be supported by the ERASMUS and Baden-Württemberg-STIPENDIUM scholarship programs.


Accommodation service

As a student in Karlsruhe, you should budget your living costs at a minimum of € 600 – 700 per month – including costs for rent of an apartment or room.
