Life in Karlsruhe

Do you see yourself in Karlsruhe? Please roll over the silhouette.

Do you think Karlsruhe is boring? Then you haven’t experienced this multifaceted and open-minded city: you can spend your free-time during the day in numerous cafés, shopping on Kaiserstraße or strolling through galleries. Also Karlsruhe has plenty to offer when it comes to culture - just take a tour through the internationally renowned art academy. Or spend an afternoon exploring one of the state-of-the-art cultural centers of Europe – ZKM in the heart of the city. When it gets dark in Karlsruhe, the city starts to pulsate with life: you can party as much as you like in numerous bars and discos. And if you feel like unwinding the next day, go on a trip to Switzerland, the nearby Alsace region or the vineyards of the Black Forest.

Life in Germany

Get up at six o‘clock on the dot, have a “Weißbier” for breakfast and set off for work in your top-of-the-line car. Your company is currently working flat out on developing an innovative new technology. Naturally the company hierarchy is rigid; employees are taciturn, yet highly dedicated. After exactly eight hours of work, you go to your local club, watch football with friends, discuss politics and, of course, enjoy another glass of “Weißbier”. That is perhaps how you might imagine life in Germany to be – if you had never been there.

In actual fact, the country that is situated between the Alps and the North Sea is so diverse, multi-cultural and open-minded that many visitors are surprised at how easy-going Germans are. Of course values such as punctuality, tidiness and inventiveness are vital. However the Germans seem to have taken on some of their French neighbours’  "savoir vivre" over the last decades. Moreover, this country in the heart of Europe is also shaped by multi-culturalism, welcoming immigrants from many countries. Tolerance and respect of other cultures are self-evident. As the biggest economy in Europe, Germany is also traditionally open-minded regarding trade relations – organizations such as BASF, Daimler or Siemens are global players that have contributed towards building up Germany’s outstanding reputation across the globe, making  "Made in Germany" a genuine seal of quality.

Foreign students are undoubtedly in good hands in Germany, as shown by the figures. 250,000 young people from across the world are currently studying at 409 universities in Germany, alongside German students. Indeed, Germany is the third most popular host country for international students.
