The specialization Globalization, Governance & Trade

I learn to create a just and prosperous world for everyone!

While globalization has contributed to a substantial rise in living standards and falling poverty over the past half-century, it has also resulted in exploitation of people and nature. Hence, the reality of globalization is felt differently all around the world. Is there a way to “fix” globalization to make sure that it works for everyone?

In Globalization, Governance & Trade, you will look behind the curtains of ‘globalization’. You will investigate the drivers of globalization, the forms globalization takes shape in, and critically examine how people’s lives are affected by globalization in a variety of contexts. This specialization not only looks at globalization “from above” but also “from below”. The local material realities of globalization are as important as the various flows of people, goods, services, information, practices, artefacts etc. and the global governance structure.

You will learn about the possibilities and challenges of globalization from a social, economic, and business perspective. Furthermore, you will be able to assess various critiques on globalization and understand how different inequalities are produced and reproduced through global trade and its problematic ‘terms’. You will learn to apply Critical Theory, Critical International Relations Theory and Post- and Decolonial Theory to the global trade regime.

Lastly, you will analyse mechanisms, practices, institutions and systems of global governance and their transformative potentialities. All in all, you will look at globalization, governance and trade in all its complexity.
