The specialization Sustainability & Urban Development
I learn to develop a sustainable future for all!
An integral understanding and holistic practice of sustainability goes far beyond "green" lifestyles or short-lived hypes. Rather, it interconnects ecology, geographies, cities, architectures, technologies and politics, thus also social and cultural values.
On the basis of sustainability as an integral approach combining ecological, economic, societal and cultural aspects, you will re-evaluate the meaning of prosperity in relation to the ‘limits to growth’. Hereby, you will apply concepts like ‘green growth’, ‘degrowth’ and ‘postgrowth’.
Furthermore, you will learn how sustainability practice can be related to urban development, including redesigning cityscapes or transition towns. You will analyze interaction dynamics and agendas of relevant players, recognize conflict patterns and observe strategies for acceptance.
Lastly, you will critically reflect the notions of ‘smart city' and ‘regional clusters' and their conflicting global political and economic environments. You will learn how to manage sustainability-related complexities, conflicts and cross-sectoral innovation networks and their socio-spatial boundedness. Comparing urban-based business models and practices, you will be able to evaluate their contribution towards a resilient, low-carbon, socially inclusive and democratic society.
All in all, you will not only learn to approach sustainability but also to contribute to integral and transformative sustainable development with empathy and responsibility.
Tobias Hess, Management (M.A.)
